TradeDepot Spots $400–$420 Million Sweet Wine Opportunity in Nigeria

In Nigeria, the sweet wine market is now projected to be worth between USD 400 million and USD 420 million annually, and it is showing signs of sustained growth.

At a press event held in Lagos under the theme “Nigeria’s New Wine Drinkers: A Culture Shift in the Making,” Onyekachi Izukanne, CEO of TradeDepot (a leading B2B distribution company), disclosed that Nigerians currently consume roughly 50 million bottles of wine each year, with consumption rising steadily.

Izukanne highlighted that around 70% of wine consumption in Nigeria is now by people under 45 years old. He attributed this trend to younger consumers preferring sweeter wines, which are seen as more approachable and better suited to Nigeria’s spicy cuisine.

He also pointed out that global sweet wine consumption rose by 40% during the COVID-19 pandemic, further influencing local drinking trends.

To capture this opportunity, TradeDepot has partnered with Bosio Family Estates, an Italian winery, to develop a wine tailored for the Nigerian palate. The product, named Amabile di Rosa, was developed after about 10 months of testing, blending and consumer feedback across Nigeria, Ghana, and other West African markets.

Izukanne described Amabile di Rosa as “sweet and fun to drink, yet serious, uncomplicated, and well balanced.”
