Nigeria’s Food & Beverage Imports Surge by ₦1.07tn in 2025
Nigeria’s food and beverage import bill recorded a significant increase in 2025, rising by ₦1.07 trillion (approx $700m) according to data released by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS). The sharp uptick highlights growing demand for imported food products, raw materials, and beverages, reinforcing Nigeria’s position as one of West Africa’s most dynamic consumer markets.
The latest figures show that food and beverage imports continue to play a critical role in meeting local demand, driven by population growth, urbanisation, and evolving consumer preferences. Staple foods, processed goods, dairy products, and beverages remain among the most imported categories, reflecting both supply gaps and increasing appetite for international brands.
Rising Demand Signals Market Opportunity
This surge underscores a key reality: Nigeria and West Africa more broadly, remains heavily reliant on imports to sustain its food ecosystem. While local production is gradually improving, it has yet to fully meet the scale and diversity of demand across the region.
For international manufacturers, exporters, and suppliers, this presents a substantial commercial opportunity. The growing import bill is not simply a statistic—it is a signal of unmet demand and an open gateway for global food and beverage businesses looking to enter or expand within the African market.
