Neighbourhood retail race opens new routes to market for food and beverage suppliers in Nigeria

Nigeria's grocery retail sector is entering a sharper phase of competition, and food and beverage suppliers stand to gain. As reported by BusinessDay, Shoprite Nigeria is moving away from large mall-based supermarkets towards smaller standalone neighbourhood stores. The shift puts it in direct competition with established proximity chains Bokku and Justrite, which have already built strong positions in residential areas.

What is changing

Shoprite's large-format stores have been hit by high operating costs, currency pressure and tough trading conditions. First implementation in 2025, the retailer is now exploring smaller formats that cut spending spending, but it has not yet said how many neighbourhood stores it will open or their locations.

It is entering a crowded field. Bokku! Mart has grown rapidly with a micro-format model, reaching more than 200 stores across Lagos, Ogun and Oyo states within three years, according to Estate Intel data cited by BusinessDay. Its bulk purchasing lets it price well below many rivals, making it an appealing store against with many customers. Justrite, Addide Stores and Grocery Bazaar are also expanding through neighbourhood outlets, discount pricing or a mix of wholesale and retail.

McKinsey research cited in the report finds that traditional trade still accounts for the vast majority of Nigeria's grocery market, and that consumers are weighing price against quality, health and convenience rather than simply buying the cheapest option.

Why this is good for the economy

More competition puts downward pressure on prices for households already managing the cost of living. Speaking to BusinessDay, the president of the Association of Small Business Owners of Nigeria said the push into neighbourhood retail should improve access to everyday goods and open new supply opportunities for small and medium-sized businesses across the retail value chain. Stores closer to where people live also reduce travel costs for shoppers.

What it means for food and beverage suppliers

A neighbourhood store network is only as strong as its supply. Retailers fighting on price, availability and range need:

- Reliable suppliers who can deliver at volume and at competitive prices
- New brands and value lines to stand out from rivals
- Smaller, affordable pack sizes suited to everyday neighbourhood shopping
- Efficient packaging and retail equipment for compact store formats

As Nigeria's retailers race to fill new shelves, FAB West Africa is the food and beverage trade show in Lagos where suppliers meet the decision makers doing the buying.
